Stingray Leather Arrow Pass
Stingray Leather Arrow Pass
Stingray leather, sometimes known as shagreen, is an incredible material, prized for thousands of years for its unique beauty and durability. It is seen on all sorts of military hardware in grips and wraps, anywhere traction or wear resistance was required. Perhaps most famous of these is on the handle of the katana, or in our case used as a wrap for grips or arrow passes on a wide variety of Asiatic bows.
But what makes this leather so special? The base is like any other leather, but on the surface the stingrays grow a pattern of hard bumps made from dentin and enamel, just like teeth. Enamel, the hardest bone in the human body, makes for a superb wear resistant arrow pass and is already seen on many higher end bows, but is also very challenging to work with. Thankfully, we do the hard part for you, carefully cutting the leather into the desired pattern. (custom designs are available upon request, anything from simple shapes to complex leather-work patterns) It can then easily be attached to your bow with the adhesive of your choice. Leather adhesive, contact adhesive, protein glues, cyanoacrylates, or even epoxies can be used depending on the underlying surface. We recommend using whatever sort of adhesive the leather arrow pass you’re likely replacing used.
